The Origin of the Logo

Logos; the past and the future of a revolutionary reality. Okay to be honest, I don’t even know what I’m saying and why I said that. I highly doubt that opening line even makes any sense. I just wanted to be corny and pretentious like those guys that do voice overs for ads of something ground breaking, actually they are never that impressive they’re just trying to up sales. (As am I but let’s pretend I did not say that). Just let me have my Hollywood moment, OK?!

Anyhow we are all besties now and my besties always love what I love! That’s something I’ll always be so sure about it.  Hence our collective decision today to talk about the history of the logo. I personally find histories of anything intriguing; there’s just that cryptic mysterious aspect about histories that makes me want to know why and how something came up. You’re probably cringing at me right now because you’ll never get it. Well I say it loud and proud; I am a history nerd! Whew that felt good to get off my chest.

I am definitely excited to look into this one with you guys. I think it’s just wild how something can start so small and then in the following generations to come it literally defines businesses. Because as we all know, logos define a business even better than a brand name does. People actually recognize a logo before they even acknowledge what the brand or name of the company is. Yeah that’s just how impactful they have gotten.

So first of all, how, when and where did the catchy word logo come about? The phenomenon of a word that we know today as logos, according to Wikipedia, is a term that was derived from a Greek word with various meanings. It meant “plea”, “opinion”, “proportion” and “speech” among other words. Heraclitus used the term for a principle of knowledge and order making it a technical term in Western philosophy between 53 5 – 475 BC, although ancient Greek philosophers used the term in varying ways but Heraclitus’ version stood out and was the closest in meaning to what we know now, I presume.

The Greek version of the word ‘logos’

Now, the moment to be awed by the logo’s history itself.

Hieroglyphics are gorgeous though!

It is widely believed that the logo can be dated back to Ancient Egyptians who originally used hieroglyphics to brand their possessions as this made identifying them convenient.  They were also used as ancient family crests and symbolism was their main role. It was not until medieval times that graphic imagery was used to differentiate between the classes and statuses of different nobilities.

This went on until around 1300 AD when pubs and shops used signs to represent what services they offered and what they did. Brilliant, am I right or what? These became, what I may call, unofficial signage for commercial purposes.  So the impact had already begun because by the looks of things (in my assumption, that is) business was going really good and clearly, businessmen and women were not going to let the logo go any time soon.

The era of the logo design that we’re thriving in now began in the 1870s with the famous Bass red triangle. It did play its role though and became memorable to our great great great grandmothers and grandfathers of the time. More reason to keep the logos sticking around and keep the dough coming in.

Later in on 1960, Chermayeff and Geismar (try not to bite your tongue mentioning their exotic names) crafted The Chase logo which paved way for modern logo design and now you know the rest…or you might as well ask Google to fill you in.

Seeing as a big part of logos were created by Egyptians and another by Greeks, I have to say these ancient people really knew how to make their revolutionary marks in history. First, their mythologies are some of the most intriguing to read about and now this; genuinely can’t wait to see what more they have in store for us to blow our minds.
